Where to See Wild Elephants in Thailand?

Written by Rita Updated Nov. 2, 2024

Spotting wild elephants in Thailand is a thrilling experience, offering a glimpse into their natural behavior. With only about 3,000 wild elephants remaining, these lovely giants primarily inhabit national parks in central and southern Thailand.

Sightings are never a guarantee. Where could you increase your chances of an unforgettable sighting? Check out the following top three places to look for wild elephants, along with tips to make the most of your trip.

1. Kui Buri National Park: Top Choice with the Highest Chance

Kui Buri National Park which is 1½ hours' drive from Hua Hin, is considered the best place in Thailand to spot wild elephants. Home to over 300 wild elephants, you could have more than a 95% chance of seeing them.

With a safari setting, you would hop in an open truck with a ranger, drive along dirt roads through the forest, and stop at several watching spots to search for wild elephants. In addition to elephants, you could also spot gaur, deer, hornbills, and more! It's a real paradise for animal lovers!

The tours run every day from 2pm to 6pm, but the best time to see them is between 4pm and 6pm when it's cooler, and the elephants are more likely to come out. Therefore, you'd better get there at around 3–3:30pm to see the most elephants and leave enough time for the full safari experience.

However, while Kui Buri offers an almost guaranteed chance to see wild elephants, it may not be ideal for those with limited time. The journey requires a significant drive from other travel hot spots, like about 4.5 hours from Bangkok. Additionally, there aren't many other top attractions nearby. This means you might miss out on experiencing the diverse offerings Thailand has to offer.

Insider tips:

  • Self-driving is forbidden inside the park.
  • As there aren't great hotels close to the park, most people choose to stay in Hua Hin, a seaside town with beachfront hotels.

2. Khao Sok National Park: Possible Chance with Diverse Adventurous Activities

Khao Sok National Park is home to one of the oldest rainforests in Asia. More often, it's regarded as a top destination for adventurous travelers. You could trek through dense jungle, explore dark caves, and kayak to enjoy untouched natural views.

Elephant sightings are just an added bonus to the broader adventure Khao Sok offers. That is because the chances of seeing elephants are not as high as in Kui Buri National Park. Elephants are most often seen drinking near Cheow Lan Lake, and boat tours or kayaking on the lake offer the best chances to catch a glimpse.

If you're looking for a guaranteed close-up elephant experience, Elephant Hills is a great option. There, you could feed and observe elephants up close in a more natural environment. Don't miss their unique tented camps in the jungle and floating tents on the lake.

3. Khao Yai National Park: Possible Chance Alongside Hiking Fun

Khao Yai is one of the more popular outdoor excursions near Bangkok. You could enjoy the adventurous fun on their light to moderate hiking routes.

You might be lucky enough to see wild elephants roaming around but spotting them could be tricky. Some trails close during the day for safety when elephants are nearby, so you probably won't see them while hiking. Instead, you would more likely find signs of them, like their droppings.

The night safari might offer a better opportunity as elephants are sometimes seen from a distance around grassy areas or salt licks.

Even though the odds of seeing elephants are low, there's still plenty of wildlife to encounter during your hike, such as gibbons, deer, and various birds. To increase your chances of seeing animals, plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon when they're most active.

Best Time to Spot Wild Elephants

Timing your trip right is key if you're hoping to see wild elephants. In Thailand, the best time to see them is anytime except during the hot season (March to May). The rainy season (June to October) stands out for fewer crowds.

During the hot season, high temperatures drive elephants to seek shade in the forest, making them hard to find in the daytime. In contrast, during the rainy season (June to October) and the cooler months, elephants are more active and tend to get out of the forest.

Why Should You Travel with an Agent to Spot Wild Elephants?

For hassle-free experiences, go with a travel agent or book a guided tour. Tickets for national parks in Thailand have to be booked in advance. A travel agent could help with that and other possible documents to make things a lot easier than trying to figure everything out yourself.

Besides, a ranger is usually mandatory when spotting wild elephants, but they speak little English. So it's better to take your own English-speaking guide for a better understanding of what's happening and where the best spots are to look. With the help of your guide, you could get more fascinating facts about wildlife and the park from your ranger.

Any Other Chances to See Elephants in Their Natural Habitats in Thailand?

Kui Buri has the best chance of seeing wild elephants, but it's not ideal for those with limited time.

Alternatively, hands-off ethical elephant sanctuaries are better for people who are not keen on wild elephants and have a short trip to Thailand. They're often in popular tourist areas, close to jungles or mountains. You could observe elephants in a natural setting with minimal interference. As wildlife viewing could be unpredictable, you could have a more guaranteed experience in the ethical sanctuaries.

Top picks include Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, and Following Giants in Krabi.

What to Pack for Wild Elephant Spotting

Binoculars are a must, as they help you see the elephants clearly without getting too close and disturbing them. Your ranger would prepare a set for your group, but if you prefer to catch more exclusive moments, take your own.

As for clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants would protect you from the elements, especially insects. Comfortable shoes are a no-brainer and don't forget snacks and water, especially if you're planning on spending hours out in the park.
