Days 1-3: Bangkok

Why Visit Bangkok? The vibrant capital city of Thailand is a dynamic blend of the old and new, with ancient temples sitting side by side with modern skyscrapers and bustling shopping malls. It's an essential stop for first-time visitors to Thailand.

You can spend two full days here: one for city attractions and the other to visit local markets outside of the city. If you have time on your arrival day or departure day, consider spending it shopping or relaxing.

What You'll Do:

Day 1: Arrival Day – Relax and Explore
Arrive in Bangkok and take it easy with a stroll through Chinatown, where you can sample street food or even opt for a traditional Thai massage to shake off jet lag. If you're feeling up to it, relax at a riverside café with a view of the Chao Phraya River. This is the perfect way to ease into the city's rhythm.

Day 2: City Highlights – Temples and River Views
Start your day by exploring Wat Pho (home to the Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun, two of Bangkok's most iconic temples. Wat Pho is also the birthplace of Thai massage, so consider booking one to experience a true taste of local culture.

Afterward, visit the Grand Palace, a stunning display of Thai regal heritage. Wrap up your day with a long-tail boat tour along the Chao Phraya River, where you'll get a peaceful, scenic view of the city.

Day 3: Local Markets – A Hands-On Adventure
Take a day trip to visit the famous Maeklong Railway Market, where you'll witness vendors quickly clearing their stalls to make way for a train. It's a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Then head to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market for a more traditional shopping experience, where you can shop directly from vendors on boats. This unique adventure is perfect for teens, giving them a mix of culture, excitement, and hands-on exploration.

Days 4-6: Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai offers a refreshing contrast to Bangkok with its laid-back vibe, charming Old City, bustling night markets, and access to nature and ethical elephant experiences.

We recommend at least two full days here—one to explore the Old City’s temples and cultural sites, and another for a memorable day with elephants in the countryside. If you have extra time, consider taking a Thai cooking class or going on a scenic hike in Doi Inthanon National Park.

Insider tip: If you can, plan your trip around November—the Yi Peng Lantern Festival is an experience you absolutely shouldn’t miss. Watching thousands of lanterns float into the night sky is pure magic and one of the most breathtaking sights in Thailand.

What You'll Do:

Day 4: Fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai – Relax and Explore
Once you arrive in Chiang Mai, take some time to relax with a massage or explore one of the city's local markets.

No trip to Chiang Mai is complete without experiencing a Thai massage. Whether or not you've already had one in Bangkok, the message here is a must-try. It's incredibly affordable, around $8-10 USD, and the experience is fantastic—whenever I'm in Chiang Mai, I can't resist getting a massage almost every evening!

Chiang Mai's markets are famous, especially if you're visiting on a Sunday when the Sunday Market near Pha Sinp Temple comes alive. It's a great chance to dive into the local culture and shop for handicrafts, snacks, and souvenirs.

Day 5: City Highlights – Temples and Scenic Views
In the morning, immerse yourself in Chiang Mai's rich history by visiting the Old City and its beautiful temples, including Wat Chedi Luang.

In the afternoon, head to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a stunning temple located on a mountain offering panoramic views of the city. This spot is perfect for photos and quiet reflection.

Insider tip: I highly recommend staying for sunset and experiencing the monk's chanting at 5 pm, which provides a truly enlightening experience.

Day 6: Elephant Encounter – Ethical and Memorable Experiences
Spend the day visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary. Here, you'll have the opportunity to feed, walk with, and even bathe elephants (based on your preferences), all in a natural and humane setting—an unforgettable experience for all ages.

There are over 30 elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, and we've personally visited and vetted more than 15 of the most prominent ones. We'll be happy to recommend the best sanctuary for you, whether you prefer a fully hands-off experience or want to stay and interact more closely with the elephants.

Days 7-10: Phuket or Koh Samui

Why Visit Phuket or Koh Samui? Thailand is renowned for its stunning beaches, and Phuket and Koh Samui are two of the country's top beach destinations.

Phuket is known for its vibrant nightlife and bustling beaches, while Koh Samui offers a more relaxed vibe with quieter beaches. See more details on: Phuket vs Koh Samui: Which Is Better to Go

What You'll Do:

Day 7: Arrive in Phuket or Koh Samui
Head to your chosen beach destination, whether it's Phuket or Koh Samui. Upon arrival, enjoy a beachside lunch and take a leisurely stroll along the shore to kick off your island escape.

Day 8: Island-Hopping Tour
Take a day trip to explore nearby islands. If you're in Phuket, you can't miss the Phi Phi Islands, famous for their crystal-clear waters and towering cliffs. In Koh Samui, venture to Ang Thong National Marine Park, a pristine area filled with emerald-green lagoons, hidden beaches, and a blend of relaxation and adventure that's perfect for nature lovers.

Day 9: Leisure Day
Enjoy a full day of leisure. Go snorkeling, kayaking, or simply relax on the beach. For families, parasailing and banana boat rides are fun ways to enjoy the water together. Couples can opt for a romantic sunset cruise with dinner, taking in the scenic views of the coastline as the sun sets.

Best Time to Visit Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand is during the cool and dry season, from November to February. The weather is pleasant with lower humidity, making it perfect for sightseeing and beach trips. It's also the peak tourist season, so expect more visitors and higher prices.

March to May is the hot season, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F). It's great for beach holidays but can be uncomfortable for outdoor activities.

The rainy season (June to October) brings short, intense downpours, but also fewer tourists and lower prices. The Gulf islands, like Koh Samui, are generally drier during this time.

If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Thailand, I highly recommend visiting in November for the Yi Peng Lantern Festival or around New Year's Eve in Chiang Mai. You'll be amazed by the sight of thousands of sky lanterns soaring into the sky—it's an unforgettable experience that truly captures the magic and charm of Thailand.
