For most first-time visitors to Bangkok, spending 3-5 days there is ideal for exploring the highlights in and around the city. Allocate 1-2 days to visit the iconic temples in the city center, and another 2-4 days to explore the nearby attractions.
If you've already visited the city and are looking to get away from the crowds at the main attractions, we offer a selection of day trips. These could range from historical towns to sandy beaches, catering to the diverse needs of various travelers.
1. Ayutthaya: the Best Day Trip for Siam's Ancient Capital History
Renowned for its impressive archaeological sites, ruins, and historical temples, Ayutthaya is a popular day trip destination from Bangkok.
To maximize your time and ensure a comfortable travel experience, we recommend visiting two to three temples in Ayutthaya Historical Park, such as Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon ( best for photography), Wat Phanan Choeng (for making offerings), and Wat Mahathat: (witness the famous Buddha head within the roots of a tree). Then visit the Thai architectural wonders at Bang Pa In, the former Royal Summer Residence.
We do not recommend cycling in the ancient city, even though it is possible. Sharing the road with motor vehicles could be dangerous. Instead, a private tour with a car and guide is a better option for safety and comfort.
If you're seeking a change from temples while in Ayutthaya, we could offer an exclusive relaxing half-hour scenic long-tail boat ride. This experience offers you the chance to observe local life. If you're fortunate, you might even come across local villagers taking their elephants to the river.
Distance from Bangkok: an hour's drive from downtown Bangkok.
2. Kanchanaburi: the Best Day Trip for War History
If you're interested in the war history of Thailand, include Kanchanaburi in your day trip from Bangkok.
Spend some time to explore the JEATH War Museum to learn about the WWII's dark past history. Then visit the historic bridge over the River Kwai and take an hour's train ride along the Death Railway over the original wooden viaduct. Reflect on the sacrifices made by those who labored under harsh conditions to reshape the landscape.
If time permits, consider visiting Kanchanaburi War Cemetery to honor the soldiers and prisoners of war who lost their lives during the construction of the Death Railway. More than 6,000 POWs, predominantly Allied soldiers, are buried at this site.
Traveling with a knowledgeable guide could help you to have an in-depth, insightful tour of these sights.

If you're interested in connecting with nature and getting up close to elephants just a short distance from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is an excellent destination to consider.
In Kanchanaburi, there are several elephant parks and sanctuaries. Here are the top two recommendations:
Both Elephant Haven and Elephant's World are great for families with teenagers. Both are ideal places for a day of elephant interactions, such as feeding them, walking through the forest to learn more about their lives, and enjoying their playful antics in a mud pit. After lunch, join the elephants for a refreshing bath in the river before concluding the adventure by feeding and capturing photos with these gentle giants.
Distance from Bangkok: about 2 hours' drive from downtown Bangkok.
4. Erawan National Park: the Best Day Trip for Nature and Waterfalls
Well-known for its beautiful waterfalls, caves, and lush forests, Erawan National Park is one of the best choices for day trips from Bangkok.
One of the highlights is the mesmerizing Erawan Waterfalls, a seven-tiered cascade of crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by a lush tropical forest. You could take a scenic trek through the verdant jungle trails, passing by each tier of the waterfall -about 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) from tier 1-7 . Swimming in the cool, crystal pools shaped by the cascading water is a relaxing way to escape the summer heat.
Insider tips: The best time to visit the waterfall is from June to October when the rainfall fills it with enough water. Tiers 3-5 offer excellent swimming spots with their deep waters. Tier 3 stands out as the best backdrop for photography.
Apart from the waterfall activities, you could discover diverse wildlife, such as colorful birds, butterflies, and even monkeys amid the lush landscape. Appreciate its rich biodiversity with rare orchids, towering trees, and vibrant blooms.

Alisa did a wonderful job! She was very detail oriented, extremely responsive and answered my questions very promptly. She incorporated all of the places we wanted to visit and was able to book hotels, airline tickets and special event tickets (to the Chiang Mai CAD Khomloy Sky Lantern Festival which was sold out when I tried booking on my own.) Alisa was great to work with and I recommend that others use her for their trip planning. More
