Are you curious about the must-visit places for your first trip to Thailand? For most of our customers (mainly couples and families), they usually spend 10 to 14 days on their first visits, mainly including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and one island (Phuket or Koh Samui).
If you have more time, you could consider:
- More cultural gems: Chiang Rai, Ayutthaya, and Kanchanaburi
- Natural adventures: Khao Sok and Khao Yai
- A hidden island: Koh Yao Noi
Scroll down to discover more about each place.
1. Bangkok: Epitome of Thailand
- Suggested days: 2–3
If you have a limited time in Thailand, Bangkok is the perfect introduction to the country's typical experiences. In this bustling capital, you could find ancient temples, Instagram-famous floating markets, Michelin-starred street food, and sky bars with breathtaking views.
Discover the best of architecture and Buddhist heritage at iconic landmarks, such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho. Museum Siam would make history more vivid and interactive for kids.
To get a glimpse of local life, take a tuk-tuk ride to start your foodie adventure at Chinatown, hop on a longtail boat through the city's canals, or explore the vibrant Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and unique Maeklong Railway Market.
For a special night out as a couple, sail on a small teakwood Manohra Dinner Cruise or enjoy a riverside dinner with a view of the illuminated Wat Arun (the prettiest temple in Thailand), and sip a drink while admiring the skyline with your partner.

2. Chiang Mai: Elephants, the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, and Almsgiving
- Suggested days: 3–5
Filled with a relaxing atmosphere, Chiang Mai stands out for its temples, ethical elephant sanctuaries, and festive celebrations.
Elephant interaction is the top thing to do in Chiang Mai. You could easily find ethical camps to feed, walk, and bathe with elephants, such as Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and Elephant Rescue Park. ChangChill is the best place for a fully hands-off encounter. (Elephant Nature Park is temporarily closed now.)
In this cultural hub of Thailand, partake in the morning almsgiving around popular temples, chat with local monks at Wat Suan Dok, and witness a sunset chanting ceremony at the mountaintop Doi Suthep temple.
Take part in the Yi Peng Lantern Festival around November or the New Year Countdown. Both festivals feature grand sky lantern-releasing events, creating photogenic backdrops for a couple's date. (Tickets are required and sold out soon. Book Now!)
If you take active teens, outdoor adventures are not to be missed. Release their energy on a Doi Inthanon hike, the highest mountain in Thailand, or by climbing the Sticky Waterfall.

3. Phuket: Vibrant Water Activities and Easy Access
- Suggested duration: 3–5 days
Your trip is not complete without a beach vacation. Phuket is well-known for thrilling water-based fun, vibrant nightlife, and a convenient location.
Island-hopping activities are always on travelers' bucket lists. Hop on a boat to snorkel at Koh Racha, kayak through limestone cliffs in Phang Nga Bay, or enjoy water sports at the Phi Phi Islands. A private charter or a longtail boat wound enhance the intimate moments together with your loved one(s). (Check the best rate with us).
Besides that, unwind in a beachfront villa, catch a sunset at Kata Beach, and enjoy a Thai massage or a cooking class. If you're into lively entertainment, Patong Beach offers bars, clubs, and live shows.

4. Koh Samui: Tropical Luxury with a Serene Atmosphere
- Suggested days: 3–5
If you're dreaming of laid-back vibes and luxurious touches, such as private pool villas, Koh Samui is your go-to destination.
Unlike Phuket's lively party scene, Koh Samui stands out with its serene beaches. Chaweng Beach, the most developed area, is perfect for watching sunrises and sunsets, while Bophut Beach offers a more tranquil and rustic atmosphere.
For a slow-paced getaway, don't miss its luxury resorts. You could choose from top-rated options known for their unique designs and privacy, such as Six Senses, Banyan Tree, and Anantara.
Additionally, Koh Samui is a drier alternative to islands in the Andaman Sea, such as Phuket, especially from July to September. (Find out more about the differences between Koh Samui and Phuket. )
5. Kanchanaburi: the Death Railway, Erawan Falls, and Floating Houses
- Suggested days: 2–3
If you're keen on some watery fun near Bangkok, Kanchanaburi (about 3 hours away) would never disappoint you.
Head to Erawan Falls to jump and swim in its crystal-clear pools. For a special stay, what is cooler than staying in a floating bungalow over the River Kwai? You could kayak, swim, and bamboo raft just outside your private bungalow.
History buffs could get a close view of WWII history at the War Cemetery and Bridge on the River Kwai, then take a local train through the most dangerous part of the Death Railway.
Kanchanaburi is always popular with families with active teens. If you're traveling with kids too, check out the travel plan.

6. Chiang Rai: Elephant Resorts and the Gateway to the Golden Triangle
- Suggested days: 2–3
Serene towns, luxury elephant resorts, the gateway to the Golden Triangle, and Karen hill tribes all make Chiang Rai a standout destination for couples.
This city is known for three colorful temples: the iconic White Temple, the Blue Temple, and the Black House Museum. Experience peaceful encounters with elephants while enjoying a luxury stay, whether in a bubble room at Anantara Golden Triangle or the tented camp at the Four Seasons.
Take a cruise to explore the mysterious Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. As well as that, you could also meet the famous longneck Karen people in Chiang Rai.

7. Khao Sok National Park: Outdoor Adventures for All Skill Levels and Floating Bungalows
- Suggested days: 2–3
If you're an adventurous couple or family seeking something different, Khao Sok is your spot. Known for its beautiful Cheow Lan Lake, rainforest, and floating bungalows, it's a place where you could reconnect with nature.
For an unforgettable adventure, visit Khao Sok National Park. Take a guided trek into deep forests and across streams and explore the dark caves.
Want more leisure hours? Kayak and cruise over Cheow Lan Lake to spot wild animals. Or simply relax in a floating bungalow for a unique, serene experience. 500Rai and the Lake Camp of Elephant Hills are highly rated choices.

8. Khao Yai National Park: Jungle Hiking and Wildlife Spotting
- Suggested days: 1–2
Khao Yai National Park, just 2½ hours from Bangkok, offers a convenient natural escape for people with limited time.
You could fully enjoy a jungle hike, even if you're just a beginner. As you wander through the dense forests, often with very few people around, you could immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.
Along the way, discover stunning waterfalls, learn about tropical jungle plants, and keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, gibbons, hornbills, and, if you're lucky, elephants. For wildlife lovers, don't miss the night safari inside the park and bat-watching at sunset.

9. Ayutthaya: Peaceful Temple Ruins
- Suggested days: 1
History enthusiasts would love Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's just a short 1-hour trip from Bangkok.
Ancient temple ruins are the main highlights of this charming historical park. Don't miss the holiest Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the impressive Wat Mahathat (with the sight of a Buddha head entwined in tree roots), and still-functioning Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon.
You might hear about biking around this historical park. However, due to narrow lanes and chaotic traffic, biking is not suggested for safety reasons. Instead, take a longtail boat ride around the city for a more peaceful experience.

10. Koh Yao Noi: Well-Known Honeymoon Destination
- Suggested days: 2–3
Want a romantic escape without the crowds? Koh Yao Noi is just an hour's ferry ride from Phuket, yet it feels like a world away. There are no big crowds and no rush—just lush forests, quiet beaches, and total seclusion.
Stay at an adult-only hotel, where privacy is the priority. Picture this: a private pool, stunning views of Phang Nga Bay, and nothing but time to reconnect with your partner.
By day, explore the island on two wheels or take a boat to hidden beaches. By night, enjoy a candlelit dinner by the waves or simply stargaze together.
