1. Visiting Elephant Sanctuaries: Spend a Day with Elephants

With more than 30 elephant sanctuaries, Chiang Mai stands out as the best place to meet these gentle giants.
As you embark on this extraordinary adventure, you would witness the elephants in their natural habitat, living in a safe and nurturing environment free from exploitation. Try to interact with these intelligent beings through many activities, including learning about their behaviors with local staff, preparing food, feeding them, watching them play in the mud and bathing, and even walking through the forest alongside them, which is a bonding experience like no other.
When selecting reputable sanctuaries to visit, here are two that we recommend. Elephant Nature Park provides a more hands-off approach, focusing mainly on feeding the elephants, and The Bush Camp Chiang Mai offers the best overnight experience.
2. Hiking in Doi Inthanon National Park

Renowned for its many cascading waterfalls, winding hiking trails, remote villages, and picturesque mountain farms, Doi Inthanon National Park is a must if you love hiking.
There are two main hiking trails in the park — the easy Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail for a half-hour walk (good for a family) and the more challenging Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail (accessible only from November to May) for a 2–3-hour adventure.
As you climb up the winding trails in Doi Inthanon, a world of breathtaking panoramas unfolds before you. Towering trees, enchanting waterfalls, vibrant flora, and a chorus of bird calls accompany your journey.
For the best hiking experience in Doi Inthanon National Park, visit between November and February for minimal rain and comfortable temperatures. The rainy season from May to October also offers lush vegetation and full waterfalls, but some terrains could be slippery on rainy days.
3. Ziplining in Rainforests in Doi Saket
Chiang Mai offers numerous ziplining adventures in nearby national parks. One of the most popular ziplining destinations is the dense rainforests of Doi Saket, boasting one of the world's longest ziplines, which spans a length of 900 m (2,953 feet).
With 26 ziplines spanning 55 platforms, this location is suitable for most visitors, including families with children above 4. Glide through the treetops like a bird in flight, enjoying breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, green valleys, and the tranquil beauty of the rainforest canopy below.
Ziplining may be affected by heavy rain or strong winds, so make sure to check the weather conditions before you head to the place.

4. Cave Exploring in Chiang Dao

Known for its spacious chambers with high ceilings adorned with intricate limestone formations, Chiang Dao Cave is the top choice for cave explorers, offering a sense of grandeur and wonder.
This extensive cave complex offers two distinct touring experiences: the main cave (about 1 km / 0.6 mile, 1½ hours), which is illuminated along the path, and the dark cave without any lighting. If you're an adventure enthusiast, you could try the dark cave (500–800 meters / 1,640–2,625 feet, 1 hour), which requires a local lantern-carrying guide to lead the way.
Please note that venturing into the dark cave could be risky during the rainy season (May to October), which is not recommended.
As you traverse through the winding passages, you would discover numerous stalactites, Buddha statues, bat colonies, and hidden corners awaiting your exploration.

5. Climbing Up the Sticky Waterfall

The Sticky Waterfall, also known as Bua Tong Waterfall, is famous for its unique feature: the limestone rocks have a natural stickiness, making climbing a thrilling experience.
The waterfall is mainly comprised of four tiers that visitors could explore. The lower tiers (1–2) are easier for families and beginners, while the upper tiers (3–4) are more challenging for experienced climbers or thrill-seekers with ropes. Going up is generally easier than going down.
The Sticky Waterfall is open year-round, but the limestone rocks during the dry season (November to April) are less slippery due to reduced water flow, ensuring an easier and more enjoyable climbing experience.

The dry season (November to February) offers cool and comfortable weather for mountain biking in Chiang Mai. Navigating during the rainy season (June to October) could be challenging, particularly for less experienced riders due to muddy, slippery dirt trails.
