Elephant Sanctuaries in Koh Samui: Worth a Visit? Top Picks? Find Out!

Written by Rita Updated Oct. 25, 2024

Are you, looking for some elephant encounters in Koh Samui? Are you, wondering if there are any ethical sanctuaries to meet elephants there?

Read on and we'll explore the top three sanctuaries where you can spend quality time with elephants in a responsible way. You can also find some helpful tips for your visit.

Is Koh Samui a Good Place to Visit an Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand?

Yes, if you're looking for a short interaction with elephants.

Although elephants are not native to Koh Samui, it does offer a few ethical sanctuaries (less than 10), which have rescued elephants from the tourist trade (mostly riding/trekking).

These sanctuaries focus on feeding and observing elephants with their natural behavior, with short feeding sessions and half-day programs. Full-day programs are only available at two sanctuaries.

If you prefer to spend a longer time with elephants, go to Chiang Mai instead. You could take part in overnight tours and week-long volunteer programs, and only pay about half the costs for similar programs in Koh Samui.

How to Choose an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary in Koh Samui

When selecting an ethical elephant sanctuary in Koh Samui, there is a primary principle to follow: no elephant riding, no shows, and no use of chains or bull hooks. These guidelines ensure that the sanctuaries prioritize the welfare of the elephants.

Impact of the Pandemic

Before the pandemic, some sanctuaries adhered to a stricter hands-off philosophy. However, to cope with the high costs of caring for elephants during this time, many had to introduce some interactions with the elephants to attract tourists, such as feeding and bathing. Despite this shift, these sanctuaries still strive to minimize human interaction and allow elephants to be elephants.

Types of Ethical Sanctuaries

As per our field research, ethical sanctuaries in Koh Samui generally fall into two categories:

  • Non-bathing sanctuaries (which we prioritize): These allow you to feed and observe elephants without bathing them, which is considered more respectful of the elephants' natural state. Samui Elephant Sanctuary, Samui Elephant Haven, and Samui Elephant Kingdom are excellent choices.
  • Bathing sanctuaries: These allow visitors to bathe elephants, which some argue can disrupt their natural behavior. Examples include Samui Elephant Home and Elephant Jungle Sanctuary.

What Is the Best Ethical Sanctuary in Koh Samui?

After thorough on-site visits and feedback from our clients, we've selected the three most ethical sanctuaries for you.

1. Samui Elephant Sanctuary: Great for Half-Day Elephant Encounters

Samui Elephant Sanctuary consistently stands out as the most ethical option that's won praise from animal welfare groups. It comes closest by minimizing human interaction, and bathing elephants is not allowed there.

Located just a 20-minute drive from the popular beaches in northern Koh Samui, the sanctuary primarily offers shared half-day tours (lasting 3 hours each), which are perfect for those with limited time to have a brief experience with the elephants.

The sanctuary has two locations (a 2-hour drive apart): Bophut and the bigger Chaweng Noi. Both offer outstanding elephant experiences, but Chaweng Noi is recommended for its awesome Jurassic Park vibe.

What Are Their Half-Day Programs Like?

When you arrive, get ready to help make special food balls for the elephants while they wait patiently. Then, feed them yummy fruits and treats.

Afterward, take a stroll around the sanctuary to meet each elephant without fences and feed all seven elephants with baskets of watermelons and other goodies. When feeding them, your guide would share their heartbreaking stories from their previous lives.

Then, watch the elephants splash around in the pool, roll in the mud, and scratch against trees. It's pure joy to see them having fun!

(During our visit, we saw how the elephants were free to do their own thing. For example, one elephant chose not to go in the pool and the mahout completely respected that. It's all about letting elephants be themselves, which is so nice!)

Wrap up your day with a simple, tasty vegetarian lunch including fried rice, pad Thai (fried rice noodles), spring rolls, chips, and fruit in the peaceful vibe.

Insider tip: if you prefer a private half-day tour, check out the Samui Elephant Kingdom.

2. Samui Elephant Haven: Ideal for Exclusive Elephant Volunteering

On Koh Samui, only two camps offer one-day volunteer experiences: Samui Elephant Haven, with a daily option for up to four people, and Samui Elephant Sanctuary, which only does weekends for a maximum of 10 people.

Therefore, beyond the typical activities, such as half-day tours and feeding sessions, Samui Elephant Haven would be an ideal choice for an exclusive full-day volunteer experience.

The best part? Get involved in more hands-on volunteer activities after a morning group tour. When the others leave, you would assist the mahouts in taking care of the elephants, such as cooking food for the elderly elephants, cleaning the campground, and planting trees.

(The activities may vary depending on the sanctuary. During our visit, we helped prepare elephant cakes to treat the elephants. Since we were the only two people there, we could fully enjoy our exclusive moments with the elephants.)

3. Samui Elephant Home: Elephant Bathing and Cultural Immersion

If you prefer an interactive elephant bathing experience, Samui Elephant Home is the best choice. Compared with an unlimited number of visitors in other camps (such as Samui Elephant Jungle Sanctuary), the elephants there wouldn't be bothered too much with a limited number of 30 people for a half-day tour.

It also offers a unique cultural immersion program in addition to its half-day elephant tours. The full-day experience goes beyond just interacting with elephants—it's a window into the local culture. The highlights include a local village visit and paying respect to a seaside pagoda.

Take a truck to Baan Bo Ran Village like the locals. After being welcomed with some flowering tea, discover a traditional Thai-Chinese house and learn about herbal plants in its garden. You would also get hands-on by helping the hosts make a traditional Thai coconut dessert, from cracking open coconuts to frying the final product.

Next, learn about local Buddhist practices at the Lamsor Pagoda. On the way to this seaside pagoda, you could enjoy the scenery through rustic villages, coconut plantations, and picturesque beaches.

How Much Are the Programs in Elephant Sanctuaries in Koh Samui?

The prices of elephant sanctuaries in Koh Samui are higher than those in other cities in Thailand.

In Koh Samui, prices tend to be in line with standard rates: about 1,000 THB (30 USD) for feeding sessions, 3,000 THB (90 USD) for half-day tours, and 4500 THB (135 USD) for a 1-day volunteer program.

Best Times to Visit Koh Samui

Koh Samui's temperatures remain consistently warm year-round, with highs above 30°C (86°F). However, rainfall has a bigger impact on planning your trip. The dry season runs from late December to April, offering perfect conditions for all activities.

May to August is considered the shoulder season. While there may be occasional rain, Koh Samui stays much drier compared to West Coast destinations, such as Phuket.

The heaviest rains occur from September to mid-December, heavily affecting water activities. Luckily, Koh Samui's elephant sanctuaries operate year-round, even during the rainy season. In fact, a rainy day could add to the experience, as the elephants enjoy mud baths even more when it's wet.

How to Get to Elephant Sanctuaries in Koh Samui

Koh Samui is quite small and you could drive from one end to the other in under an hour.

For most elephant sanctuary programs, hotel transfers are included. The sanctuaries usually arrange shared vans, so you don't have to arrange transfers by yourself. But a shared van means that you may spend more time on transfers as they also pick up or drop off others at different hotels.

If you prefer a more exclusive experience, take a private transfer yourself—a private transfer from a travel agent (like us) or a taxi. Just a heads-up: taxis on the island rarely use meters, which could result in higher prices.

Where to Stay in Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a compact island, making it easy to explore regardless of where you choose to stay. Whether you're near the beach or in the heart of the island, you're never far from the elephant sanctuaries (no more than an hour's drive).

Based on our clients' feedback, we highly recommend staying in the following popular beach areas:

  • Chaweng Beach: This is a unique beach to catch both a sunrise and sunset, with easy access to restaurants, shops, and entertainment.
  • Bophut Beach: a tranquil vibe and water activities
  • Maenam Beach: beach views and rural life.
