Is May a Good Time to Visit Kyoto?

May is one of the best months to visit Kyoto, particularly if you want to avoid the crowds that the cherry blossoms lure in. It's a healthy combination of sunshine and mild warmth, with the occasional shower, but it is just about outside the typhoon season and also preludes the heat of summer.
Other reasons to visit Kyoto in May include the azalea blooming season, which you can enjoy at Mimuroto-ji Temple, Yabusame at Shimogamo-jinja, and Aoi Matsuri. Read on for more information about what to see and do in Kyoto in May.
If possible, avoid traveling from April 29 to May 5, which is Japan's Golden Week. During this time, many locals are traveling, making attractions and roads very crowded.
Top Places and Activities in Kyoto in May
1. Enjoy the More Than 20,000 Colorful Azaleas at Mimuroto-Ji Temple
Each year in early May, visitors head over to Mimuroto-ji temple to enjoy the beautiful azaleas. This temple, located in Uji in the suburbs of Kyoto, is home to an incredible 20,000 azalea trees, whose colors make for a wonderful sight and add to the beauty of the already beautiful temple.
The temple itself is around 1,200 years old and is quite worth exploring.
If you find yourself visiting at the end of May or early June, you might see the hydrangeas instead, which are also gorgeous.
2. Watch the Annual Parade for Aoi Matsuri, or Hollyhock Festival
Each year, on May 15, Kyoto's Kamo Shrines hold Aoi Matsuri, or Hollyhock Festival. The ceremony and procession are a great way to see some of the beautiful traditional clothing, enjoy the shrines with their blooming gardens, and learn a little more about Kyoto's history.
The procession is from the Imperial Palace, towards the Kamo Shrines, and ends at Shimagamo Shrine, where ceremonies are performed.
3. Experience a Mounted Archery Ritual (Yabusame Shinji)
Every year, on May 3, a mounted archery ritual (known as Yabusame Shinji in Japanese), is held at Shimogamo Shrine. You'll be able to see the old archery style dating back around 850 years, as horseback riders gallop down a path and fire their arrows along the way. This is definitely something you don't see every day.
4. Check out the World Expo Exhibition at Kyoto National Museum
To honor the World Expo Osaka 2025, the Kyoto National Museum is hosting a special temporary exhibition displaying around 200 of Japan's greatest art treasures. If you are interested in art, this is a must-see in Kyoto and the perfect way to spend a rainy morning or afternoon in May.
You'll be able to view special paintings, sculptures, works of beautiful calligraphy, and decorative art both from early medieval times as well as modern pieces.
What to Wear in Kyoto in May?
Given that Kyoto in May is mild to warm, we recommend packing clothing that can both serve to keep you warm in the mornings and evenings, but also cooler clothing for the middle of the day. A t-shirt with a hoodie or a jumper is likely enough to keep you warm.
We also recommend bringing an umbrella or a waterproof layer, given that there is a chance of encountering a rainy day, as well as your sunglasses, sunscreen, or a cap to keep your face protected against the sun if you're spending a longer time outdoors on a bright day.
