Top Places and Activities in Tokyo in June
June marks the beginning of the summer festival season in Tokyo. You could enjoy few events which provide unique cultural experiences.
1. Celebrate at the Sanno Festival (Sanno Matsuri)
One of the most notable events is the Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine, one of Tokyo's three great Shinto festivals. This mid-month (June 7–13) celebration features processions of participants and dancers dressed in traditional attire, carrying portable shrines through the streets, creating a lively and colorful spectacle.
The festival is especially enjoyable after the rains when the weather is a bit cooler. You can walk around the streets, join in the lively celebrations, or watch the vibrant procession.
2. Experience the Tokyo Hotaru Festival
The Tokyo Hotaru Festival, held in early to mid-June, provides a magical evening along the Sumida River. Thousands of LED-lit lanterns are released onto the water, creating a beautiful display that resembles fireflies (hotaru in Japanese).
Travelers can participate by releasing their lanterns or enjoy the view from the riverbanks, where various cultural performances, music, and street food vendors add to the festive atmosphere. The rainy season enhances the reflective beauty of the river, making this a unique visual experience that you should attend.

3. Enjoy the Tsukiji Shishi Festival
The Tsukiji Shishi Festival is typically held on June 10 at Tsukiji Market, with attendees praying for business prosperity. Although not as well-known as other festivals, it is still interesting to experience.
Various floats will be carried from the shrine to the main street. Participants will clap their hands and shout slogans along the way. When I visited Tokyo in June, I came across this festival, and the atmosphere was so lively that I easily got caught up in it.
4. Museum Hopping and Indoor Delights
June's frequent and unpredictable showers can make Tokyo's indoor attractions even more appealing.
Visiting museums is a great way to escape the rain and learn about Japan's history. You could visit Tokyo National Museum or Edo-Tokyo Museum to learn about Japan's history and art during a rainy day. The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum blends art, architecture, and nature. Visitors can check out beautiful art deco exhibitions that span contemporary and classical art.
Enjoying desserts at theme cafes is also a great idea. Tokyo has a variety of theme cafes, from animal cafes to anime cafes, all offering coffee and desserts that match the theme. I had a wonderful time at Pompompurin Cafe. The cafe is filled with Pompompurin elements, the waitresses are dressed like it, and the drinks and desserts are adorable.
With fewer crowds and a cozy, rain-enhanced atmosphere, June is an excellent time to explore these cultural gems at a leisurely pace.

5. Admire Blooming Hydrangeas
In June, hydrangeas begin to bloom and are in full bloom by mid-June. You could see these beautiful flowers in many places throughout Tokyo.
Sumida Park and Ueno Park are two of Tokyo's most popular spots to see beautiful hydrangeas. If you're planning a day trip to Hakone or Kamakura, both places also provide charming hydrangea scenery. In Hakone, take the Hakone Tozan Railway to enjoy hydrangeas along the way. In Kamakura, Hasedera is the perfect place to enjoy these lovely flowers.
I visited both the Hakone Tozan Railway and Hasedera. For me, I prefer the railway because I can admire the flowers while enjoying views of the local houses and hills at the same time. Hasedera tends to be more crowded.
What to Wear in Tokyo in June
When visiting Tokyo in June, we recommend wearing short sleeves with a long sleeve over them. If it's raining, temperatures may be around 20℃ (68℉), so a long sleeve is suitable. However, after the rain, temperatures might increase, leading to humidity. In this case, short sleeves would be more comfortable.
Due to the likelihood of showers, a light, waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella could be handy. If you are planning to go for outdoor activities, we suggest wearing quick-drying clothes, and a hat to shield from both sun and rain is a good idea.
A light long-sleeve shirt can be useful for indoor activities such as visiting museums, dining out, or taking the subway. In Tokyo, air-conditioned spaces are often fully turned on, making you feel cooler.
Are there fewer crowds in Tokyo in June?
Yes, crowds are generally smaller in Tokyo in June compared to peak seasons like cherry blossom season (March to April), Christmas, and New Year. However, most-visited attractions such as Senso-ji and Harajuku still have numerous travelers.
