Tokyo Weather in July — Rainy Season, but Good to Visit for Festivals

Tokyo is very hot and humid in July with an average daytime temperature of around 25 °C (77°F). This month is part of the rainy season, so you may see daily showers or sometimes heavy rains.

It is true that this month is not a good time to visit Tokyo if you mainly consider the weather. However, it's not impossible to enjoy Japan during this time with some planning. Moreover, you could experience lots of festivals and fireworks displays throughout the city during this time. Just prepare for the weather and you should still have a great time.

Tokyo's Weather and Climate in July

July is the peak of summer in Tokyo. It is hot with the highest temperature sometimes reaching 35 °C (95°F) or even higher. You will feel very hot outside due to the humidity. Since there are no trees lining the streets and tall buildings block the wind, Tokyo feels even hotter, especially when compared to more-spread-out cities with similar high temperatures.

The first half of the month is quite humid with a lot of days seeing continuous rain and cloudy weather. In July, it is rare for Tokyo to experience consistent sunny days.

Toward the end of the month, the rain starts to diminish, and sunny days become more frequent.

Is July a Good Time to Visit Tokyo?

Tanabata japan fesstival

July may not be a good time to visit Japan if you're mostly thinking about the weather. However, it can be a fantastic time for vibrant celebrations, fewer crowds at popular attractions, and less expensive international flights. The key factor is how you schedule your activities. With some planning, you can have an amazing trip in Japan, despite the heat and humidity.

We suggest you plan more indoor attractions, and allow some indoor time in between outdoor activities to get some reprieve from the heat and the rain. Need help to plan your Japan trip? Contact us for expert advice.

Advantages of Visiting Tokyo in July

July is a time of the year with lots of activities in Tokyo, given that the early month sees Tanabata Matsuri celebrations, and the end of the month sees Sumida River Fireworks Festival. You will see colorful decorations and fireworks displays during the festival.

International ticket prices will be cheaper and there will be less-crowded attractions.

Tanabata Matsuri is also known as the Star Festival, and celebrates the meeting of two deities in love who were separated by the Milky Way. Only on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month are these deities allowed to reunite. Celebrations happen on the 7th of July, as well as on the seventh lunar day of the seventh lunar month (29 August in 2025, and 19 August 2026).

Sumida River Fireworks Festival is celebrated every last Saturday of July, (26 July 2025, 25 July 2026), and is a great opportunity to see lots of incredible firework displays, have nice food and enjoy your evening in Tokyo. The fireworks are set off over the Sumida River, so we recommend watching in Asakusa.

Disadvantages of Visiting Tokyo in July

The only thing to bear in mind is the weather. You will need to be prepared for rain showers (we suggest bringing an umbrella or a poncho), as well as humid and very hot weather.

In our opinion, if July is your only available time to visit Japan, just go. The good thing to note is that it does not rain every day, and rainfall decreases in frequency towards the end of July.

Top Places and Activities to Enjoy in July

As the weather is very hot this month, we suggest some cool places and indoor places, and also some activities unique to this month. These places are perfect for first-time travelers to Tokyo.

1. Discover Tokyo Ueno Park and Tokyo National Museum

Ueno Park is a vast park housing Japan's National Museum. Take a leisurely walk amidst lush greenery (unless it rains), and then explore the museum to delve into Japanese culture and art. It's the largest art museum in Japan and the country's oldest national museum.

2. Experience TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets

These two interactive museums are Tokyo's most famous. Using digital technology, they offer awe-inspiring visual and sensory experiences. Visitors can engage with various artworks and projections that respond to their movements, offering a unique and captivating artistic journey.

3. Watch the Incredible Fireworks of Sumida River Fireworks Festival

The biggest summer fireworks festival in Japan is the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, held on the last Saturday every July, (26 July 2025, 25 July 2026). It kicks off at 7pm, and runs for 90 minutes, attracting huge crowds from all over the country. If you are in Tokyo during these dates, we highly suggest picking one of the viewing spots below and enjoying the show.

The best places to watch the fireworks that are less crowded are Shiori Park (near Minamisenju Station) or the northern part of Oyokogawa Water Park close to Honjo-Azumabashi Station and Tokyo Skytree Station.

The more buzzing spots (which will have some food and drink stalls) include Azuma Bridge, near Asakusa Station, and Sumida Park, along the river.

4. Enjoy Dinner at a Themed Restaurant/Café

Tokyo's themed restaurant each create a special dining experience by designing a unique environment that takes customers to a whole new world or time period. There are anime-themed cafés, character cafés, animal cafés, etc.

These cafés are very popular and hard to book in busy travel times. So, in July, the low travel season, you would more-easily book the best themed restaurants, and you could enjoy a quieter interesting dining experience. Some of the best themed restaurants in Tokyo include Robot Restaurant, Kawaii Monster Café, Alice in Wonderland, and Ninja Akasaka.

What to Wear in Tokyo in July

Given the heat and humidity in Tokyo in July, we recommend wearing breathable clothing made of natural fabrics in lighter colors. Linen shirts, cotton shorts and t-shirts, and breathable, loose-fitting summer dresses are more likely to help you feel cooler.

To deal with the rain, we suggest bringing an umbrella as well as a poncho. Showers could come in quickly and be heavy, so we recommend being prepared if you aren't in a position to head into a café or museum while it showers. A cap is also a good idea, or sunglasses and a hand-held fan to protect yourself from the sun and heat.

To ensure you're able to explore as much as you want to, we suggest supportive and waterproof footwear too, or bringing an additional pair of shoes.

Tips for Visiting Tokyo in July

Plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities: Visit indoor museums like teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets for rainy days

Choose indoor shopping districts like Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ginza for a convenient shopping experience without needing to venture outdoors. Avoid Harajuku, Nakameguro, Daikanyama, and Akihabara, as their shops are scattered on outdoor streets.

Be prepared for heat and rain by carrying a hat, umbrella, poncho, and hand-held fan. Stay hydrated and carry water.

Keep your schedule flexible due to the likelihood of some rainy weather. Spend time outdoors when the weather is good but engage in indoor activities during mid-day to early afternoon and rainy periods.
