The Best Places to Visit in Nepal in February

With the rise in temperatures and continued sunny weather, February is a good time to visit the low-altitude areas and the national parks of Nepal without too many tourists. Here are some of the recommended places to visit if you are going to Nepal in February.

1. Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu

Boudhanath Stupa

As the must-visit city of Nepal, Kathmandu offers a great chance to learn more about Nepal's history, culture, and religion. Among the numerous temples in Kathmandu, Boudhanath Stupa is the one you can't miss. It is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. The massive mandala and its bright colors may amaze you when you first see it. Lots of people visit it to make wishes and seek blessings from the Buddha. As one of Nepal's UNESCO World Heritage sites, Boudhanath Stupa is one of the most-visited attractions in Kathmandu.

2. Thamel District, Kathmandu

Thamel District

The busy streets, bustling nightlife, good restaurants, colorful shops, and chaotic night markets make Thamel a must-visit place for most travelers to Nepal. The numerous ancient shrines and cultural monuments scattered through the district would help you learn more about Nepal's history and culture. After a full day's touring in other parts of Kathmandu, a rest in Thamel will help you relax and re-energize. Walking through the narrow streets is the best way to discover the secrets of the city.

3. The International Mountain Museum, Pokhara

As a trekkers' paradise, Nepal is well-known for its Himalayan views and mountaineering. If you are interested in the history of mountaineering, then the International Mountain Museum is a good place for you to go. The museum displays not only the historical aspects of mountaineering, but also historical artifacts of the region and its people. There you could get a greater understanding of mountaineering in Nepal and other countries while learning more about indigenous groups and their cultures.

4. World Peace Pagoda, Pokhara

World Peace Pagoda

Similar to Kathmandu, there are numerous stupas and temples in Pokhara. And the World Peace Pagoda (Pokhara Shanti Stupa) is a must-visit if you are in Pokhara for the first time. Located on the top of Ananda Hill, World Peace Pagoda is a peaceful and quiet mountain temple. You may get spectacular views of the Annapurna Range, Phewa Lake, and Pokhara Valley on a clear day. Remember to wear good quality walking shoes/boots as the steps to the top are steep and slippery after rain.

5. Langtang National Park, Kathmandu Valley

It is said that a trip without a national park is not a perfect trip to Nepal, which is famed for its rich jungle-wildlife-watching opportunities. Close to Kathmandu Valley, Langtang National Park is not only a good place to watch jungle wildlife, but also well-known for its beautiful trekking trails. Lots of photographers are attracted by its stunning landscape and mountain views. The park is a habitat for numerous species, such as musk deer, red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, serow (goat-antelopes), and more than 250 species of birds. It also exhibits a high diversity of vegetation types (14) and ecosystem types (18).

Crowding and Costs in February

February is the last month of winter in Nepal. With temperatures increasing to warm levels late in the month, more and more travelers come to Nepal to appreciate the country's spring views. But crowds are not a problem as yet, since some of the trekking routes are not open.

Hotel and tour prices are still at low season levels in February. If you are planning a trip to Nepal, contact us — we can do all the research and booking for your ideal trip.

What to Bring/Wear in February

Temperatures in February are still pretty cold at night and early in the morning in Nepal. It is common for travelers to pack some warm clothes — sweaters, thick trousers, jeans, warm comfortable shoes, and light jackets or coats to change into when the temperature drops.

Snowfall can be seen in some highland areas of Nepal, but not often, while rainfall is rare in the major traveling destinations. A light waterproof coat or an umbrella would probably not be needed with only 2–3 rainy days on average in February in Pokhara and Kathmandu.
